You can hear the calls of the swans as you arrive. The calls are getting close as you cross the bridge to the reserve and what you find when you get to the main hide is white forms gliding around a lagoon. Watch as the sunsets over the illuminated lagoon and you become surrounded by the inky black of night. Most of the swans return to the reserve to roost for the night. The guide tells the story of the swans and their journeys they have made to get to the Ouse Washes for winter before going out to feed the birds.  Enjoy close-up views of whooper and mute swans, as they tuck into the grain.  Any ringed swans that come out onto the islands or stick their bottom up out of the water can be entered into the swan computer to find out more about them. The guide returns to the hide after the feed, where there is time to ask any questions and get a bit of help reading any leg rings. The Welney Wetland Centre is Britain’s largest area of seasonally-flooded land covering 420 hectares. In the wintertime, 9,000 Whooper and Bewick Swans arrive in this Wetland Centre. These beautiful swans winter on the Ouse Washes at Welney making their way here from Iceland and Arctic Russia. … it is certainly a spectacle not to be missed. Whilst watching the Swans in their natural habitat through an observation window in the heated observation hide, one of the wardens will give us a commentary regarding the swans and ducks that winter at Welney, as well as some interesting history of the site. Afterwards, the swans are fed in front of the hide windows where you are able to observe the gorgeous wild swans and ducks up close. However, not only Swan and Duck Species can be observed. Many other species can be seen from the reserve's hides, paths and board walks of the Welney Wetland Centre. On arrival we will have a member of the team meet the coach to explain about the centre. We are booked for the 3.30pm swan feed, and our meal is booked for 5pm. Please let us know your selection when booking: Haddock, Chips & mushy peas; Sausage, mash and onion gravy; homemade pie, chips and peas; jacket potato with one topping and salad.
